Car Key Repair - How to Fix a Dead Remote
The car remotes are a great convenience for drivers. They allow you to unlock doors, gain access to trunks, and even start the engine. However, they may stop working at inconvenient times.
If you discover that your key fob is not working, you can try a few quick fixes before going to the dealership. These steps could save you money.
Keyless Entry System
Instead of fumbling around with keys in your purse or pocket, you can simply walk up to your car, press a button on your key fob and then unlock the doors and start the engine. It's a simple function that makes driving a car more enjoyable and secure. But just like any device that has a keyless entry system, the keyless entry system can fail due to repeated use or because of other reasons. If you've experienced problems with your keyless entry system, there are two options: Go to the dealership or contact an emergency locksmith in your area.
The way a keyless entry system functions is by sending out radio signals and then searching for a corresponding response signal from the key fob. If the system detects the signal, the car's doors are unlocked and the onboard computer is activated. Certain systems include another transmitter located in the trunk of the car which opens when you move one foot underneath it.
Each key fob is assigned an individual digital identification number by the manufacturer. The fob is programmed by an exclusive process known as "programming". This involves turning the ignition of the car several times in a specific sequence. It may also require pulling buttons or levers, or removing the fuse.
Once a key fob has been programmed into your car's keyless system, it transmits a digital identity code and a function code that instruct the car to (lock the trunk, unlock it or open the trunk). The receiver in the car confirms that the transmitter is who it claims to be through an authentication and encryption process. The computer in the car will allow the vehicle to be opened and start the engine when it is authenticated.
A skilled criminal could snoop and use the code sent between the keyfob and the vehicle. This would require the use of an instrument that records the transmission and then transmits it again in the event that the system doesn't want it to. To prevent this from happening issue, the majority of keyless entry systems use a method called rolling code, which ensures that each new transmitter signal received by the vehicle has a different counter value than the previous one.
Batteries

Buttons
The buttons on your key fob could be small but they're loaded with electronic components. Therefore, it's not surprising that they're doomed to fail from time time. The good thing is, when your car's key button isn't working, there's usually something you can do to fix it yourself.
One of the most frequent reasons why a car key remote doesn't work is because dirt or grit has lodged between the buttons. To remedy this, take out the batteries carefully and scrub each button with an abrasive that has been submerged in rubbing alcohol. Be sure to dry the batteries completely before reinstalling them.
It's possible that your key fob is damaged in some way, like being dropped on concrete or accidentally scratched. If this is the case using an alternative key fob to verify its function might reveal that it has been damaged and requires to be replaced.
The door lock sensor may have been unable to function in your vehicle. This sensor is a small metal component attached to the key fob's door lock button.
